Motivation is a MYTH

 

Motivation is a mythI get asked all the time:

“How do I get motivated?”

  • To workout
  • To eat healthy
  • Stop drinking
  • Start my own business
  • Etc.

But motivation CAN’T BE a myth, can it?

The thing is, motivation is not something we GET, it’s something we BECOME when we take action!

 

Something else we do is confuse motivation with excitement. The two are not the same thing.

 

Consider this: we have to get up early to catch a plane for an amazing vacation. How “motivated” do we need to be for that? NADA! That’s because we are EXCITED for that!

 

Yet, we find ourselves struggling with getting up to do a workout, or some personal development, or to do some work on our business before heading off to our 9 to 5. That’s because we don’t feel excitement over that!

Then what can I do?

The good news is, all it takes is shift in our thinking. We can learn to feel some excitement over these things if we choose to do so.

 

We also don’t have to be “motivated” to do things that have become habits in our lives, as well as areas of responsibility and obligation we have.

 

I mean, when was the last time you said, “I’m just not MOTIVATED to brush my teeth today.”? Most likely, never. (If you have, you probably need to seek the help of a professional, and find out what is going on).

 

The reason we don’t go around saying we aren’t motivated to brush our teeth is because it is a habit that is ingrained in us, and we do it almost without even thinking.

 

Or as far as our responsibilities go, like going to work or taking kids to their activities, we may not FEEL motivated, but we do it anyway.

 

So, I want to issue a little challenge for you:

 

The next time you start telling yourself you aren’t motivated to exercise or eat right, or whatever else you think you need to be “motivated” for, take the advice that Nike gave us some time ago, and “Just do it”.

 

Once you start, you will develop the habits you need to keep going, and quitting becomes more of a challenge than the doing.
