3 Reasons Why Resolutions Fail and How to Change That This Year

3 Reasons Why Resolutions Fail and How to Change That This YearI got to thinking about the different types of New Year’s Resolutions people make, and how we tend to fall short sooner or later in those areas, each and every year. Which made me realize that there are a few reasons this happens:

  • Failing to commit

  • Failing to make and follow a plan

  • No accountability or support

Are there any other reasons you can think of? Any other reasons why you haven’t been able to succeed in the New Year’s Resolutions you set?

Let’s dive into these three and see if that shines more of a light onto things.

  • Failing to commit:

This might actually be the biggest one I see, in myself, family and friends, and people I coach. The thing is when we start from a place of something we SHOULD do, maybe from pressure from an outside source, but we are not motivated internally to make the changes, there is a good chance we won’t even get started, and if we do, we will fail pretty fast.

So the first place to start should be finding a way to commit to the new goals. We need to have some level of passion for the new goal, and a real reason (or sometimes called “the why”) to make the changes. Tony Robbins teaches us that when the pain of staying where we are is greater than the comfort of where we are at, that is when we will be motivated to commit to a change.

Maybe you’ve experienced something like that in your own life?

-The pain of debt is greater than the joy of spending money you don’t have is too great, so you cut back on unnecessary spending or start that side business?

-The pain of being overweight and out of shape is greater than the joy of eating those extra treats in front of the TV watching your favorite shows?

-The pain of being disorganized and cluttered is greater than the joy of pushing things off until later?

I’m pretty sure I could list several more, but you get the idea, right?

When we get to a place where we are willing to commit to a change, NO MATTER WHAT, we will find a way to make it happen. Until then, we will only find excuses (and yes, they really are excuses 99% of the time. Sorry to burst your bubble.).

So this is the first place to start, finding something, ANYTHING, that you are willing to do to commit 100% to, and stick with it no matter what.

Maybe you are willing to get yourself a FitBit and get 10,000 steps in a day.

Maybe you are willing to spend an hour or two on a Sunday to meal plan and prep so you have healthy meals to eat during the week instead of grabbing the fast and easy but oh-so-unhealthy take-out food.

Maybe you are willing to cut back a few channels on your cable or satellite, or make fewer trips to Target so you can save a few dollars to put towards your debt?

Maybe you are willing to get a pretty new water bottle that motivates you to drink more water during the day, instead of pop or energy drinks?

We will go a bit deeper in some of the areas we all say we want to make changes in a bit, but these are just a few of the small changes we can start to make that will help us develop good habits and build that foundation to a successful life change.

2. Failing to make and follow a plan:

This might be the area where I’ve hit roadblocks that have derailed me in the past. I get excited and want to jump into making the new changes and develop new habits, but I jump in too fast and haven’t come up with a really good, solid plan. Anyone else like that, now or ever??

I’m going to offer a few plans that I’ve learned to follow (or am in the process of following) and I know from my own experience or others experiences that they are excellent plans to follow.

So here we go!!

I recommend Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Makeover”. I bought this book going on 2 years ago and have been working the plan ever since. I only use cash for things like groceries, clothes, household necessities and the like. There are things that I do have to use a debit or credit card for (like this website, for example), but I’d say 95% of what I pay for I use cash.

I got myself a handy dandy little coupon organizer (like this one) and when I get paid, I take the cash out and divvy it up into my envelopes. It’s kind of funny because there have been times I’ll be at the grocery store or Target and it confuses the person checking me out. They think I’m pulling out a stack of coupons! Then when they realize it’s how I do my cash, quite often they are really impressed and comment what a great idea that is.

Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Makeover” works off the concept of the “7 Baby Steps”, which in any area of life is the best way to build a good, solid foundation to ultimate success.

Step 1 is to save $1000 as soon as possible for the emergency fund; a fund to use when something breaks down or a larger unexpected expense comes up. Something that in the past we would put on a credit card, like a car or appliance breaking down.

Step 2 is to pay off all debt except your mortgage using the debt snowball.

Step 3 is to save up 3 to 6 months of income (different than the emergency fund, but a bigger fund in the event someone is not able to work for a certain amount of time).

Step 4 is to invest 15% of your household income into a Roth IRA and pre-tax retirement.

Step 5 is saving money for kids college.

Step 6 is paying off your mortgage.

Step 7 is to build your wealth and give money away.

It’s a pretty cool system, and if at any step you get stuck or something in life happens unexpectedly, you go back to whatever previous step you need to go to and work that step until you complete it again and move on from there.

I highly recommend this system! It’s fairly simple to implement and start using. From my own experience, when I first started to take my cash out and put it in my envelopes, I felt like “Oh my gosh, I have NO MONEY!!!!”. But, it only took a couple weeks or so to get over that, when I would look in my envelope for say, gas, and there were at least a couple of $20 bills in there. That was when I knew that I would stick with this system for good.

This is an area that I am diving much deeper into for 2017. Since I started Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Makeover”, I don’t bring as much stuff home as I used to. I have, however, developed a passion for thrift store shopping and when I do allow myself to venture into one of the many thrift stores in my area, I can come home with a ton of stuff that I may or may not have really needed, just because I could spend $20 or $30 on some cute clothes or other stuff for the house.

So what I will be starting, and have heard some incredible stories about, is Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”.

I am in the process of finishing the book and making my plan to start this process and am getting pretty excited about it. I’ll officially start on January 1st with my clothes.

Marie Kondo’s method is not like other declutter and get organized methods you may have heard of or tried before. She works on the concept of decluttering and organizing by category, instead of by room, and to do it as quickly as possible.

First, you tackle your clothes, then books, then paper items, followed by “komono” or miscellaneous items, and ending with sentimental items (because they are the hardest to part with). There are subcategories for each category too, to help us stay focused and not get too overwhelmed.

Another way her method differs is that she wants us to touch each item and decide if it brings us joy. If it does not, then we thank the item for being part of our lives before we discard it. This does resonate with me and something I’m looking forward to going through (maybe famous last words though!!!). I’ve actually been doing this on a very small scale the last few days; touching something and if I feel it does not bring me joy, I throw it away or put it in the donation box. I’m figuring that this is the on-going way to help keep things under control in the long run, and doing a bit here and there can only be a good thing.

So, like I said, I will officially be starting this on January 1st with my clothes. I need to decide if I will stick with doing one of the categories each weekend, or more often than that. I’m leaning towards just doing them on the weekend, when my time is a bit more flexible because I feel I could get hyper-focused if I tried doing it during the week and then not get much else done!

I plan on sharing my journey with you all, through video and here on the blog, so stay tuned for that.

This is one of my favorites of all time! I am NOT a natural early bird; quite the opposite actually. I can easily stay up to midnight, 1 AM, 2 AM if I allowed myself. There are days I feel I am clearer and more focused later at night than in the morning, and I have to work with myself to not get back into that habit.

That is where “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod comes in. This book has changed my life significantly, and that is not an exaggeration.

I first heard Hal Elrod on a podcast I was listening to when I was walking my dog, Crystal. I loved his story and what he went through prior to bringing “The Miracle Morning” to the world. That he was not one that loved to get up early, but what changed in his life once he started to practice the steps that became “The Miracle Morning” was just short of, well, miraculous.

I figured if it worked for him, then it could work for me too!!!

But, I didn’t get his book right away. I actually started just listening to his podcast, “Achieve Your Goals with Hal Elrod”. As of this writing, the podcast is on hiatus because Hal was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment. That being said, if you have not listened to his podcast ever, then there is plenty of amazing information for you to dive into.

I learned a lot from his podcast in the earlier days on how to do the Miracle Morning, but I did buy the book and learned tons more from the book that I did not get from the podcast, and I’ve read it at least a couple more times since.

Hal’s Miracle Morning is based on 6 steps, he calls SAVERS. They break down to be:

S- Silence, as in meditation, gratitude or prayer.

A- Affirmations

V- Visualization

E- Exercise

R- Reading

S- Scribing, or journaling

You don’t have to spend a ton of time on each, or do them in any particular order. Just do them each morning before you officially start your day, and you will begin to see many positive changes in your life.

He goes into other things we all can do to get our day off on the right foot, how to go from a night owl to an early bird, and has even come out with other more specific books for realtors, network marketers, families, writers, salespeople, and entrepreneurs.

Get the book and take his 30-day challenge to see how it can impact your life!

This next book is one that I read before, but never actually implemented it even though I loved the concept and can totally see how it can be a game-changer.

The book I’m referring to is “The 12 Week Year” by Brian Moran.

That, however, is changing on January 1st as well, and I have several of the coaches on my Beachbody team joining me.

“The 12 Week Year” has us take a year’s worth of work and squeeze it into 12 weeks instead of 12 months. Sound a little daunting?

It doesn’t have to. Let me explain:

First, we have 3 main goals we will focus on for the 12 weeks, and commit 100% to those goals, no other.

Then, for each goal, we set actions we will do each day or, when appropriate, each week, that will get us to the goal.

We “keep score” on how we are doing, and a score of 85% or better is real good.

I picked my coaching business, with a few action steps including writing more frequently, as my first main focus. My 2nd one has to do with my health and fitness, and my 3rd is decluttering and organizing my home (which brings in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up mentioned above).

This book, from hearing from others who have put it into action, can take us to heights that we can only imagine right now. I’m looking forward to it because I have a tendency to get either hyper focused on one thing, or super distracted and in either case, results in me not getting as much accomplished as I would really like.

Hands down, “Eat That Frog” by Brian Tracy is your book.

This is a book I’ve read a couple of times and is on my “Books to Read” list for 2017 since it’s been at least a couple of years since I’ve read it.

In simplest terms, Brian Tracy teaches us “that the first rule of frog eating is this: if you have 2 frogs to eat, eat the ugliest one first. The second rule is this: if you have to eat a live frog at all, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it for long.”.

This is Brian Tracy’s fun way of getting us to deal with the things we tend to put off because we don’t want to deal with them. And then we are spending all sorts of energy NOT dealing with them!

He has 21 ways to stop procrastinating and get more done in less time, and who the heck doesn’t want that, right?? And to top it off, the way he presents how to stop procrastinating and getting things done, by visualizing the tasks as frogs, makes it pretty humorous too.

beachbody-on-demandThere is one super amazing tool that you can use….. That is Beachbody on Demand, basically your Netflix for fitness.

Beachbody on Demand has all of the fitness programs ever made by Beachbody, and you can stream them anytime you want, on practically any device you choose.

Want to get more cardio in and not have to invest in or deal with a bunch of equipment? You can try the various workouts by Shaun T, like INSANITY, T25 or Cize.

Like to dance? You can do Brazil Butt Lift, Hip Hop Abs, Cize, or Country Heat.

Like short workouts? You can get access to 21 Day Fix, T25 or 22 Minute Hard Core.

Want more strength training? How about some Body Beast, Master’s Hammer and Chisel, P90X or ChaLEAN Extreme?

There are also Beachbody on Demand exclusives, like the 3 Week Yoga Retreat, and the trainer’s bonus programs, plus the Fixate cooking show and the reality show that helped to choose the next Beachbody super trainer, The 20’s.

This is an amazing opportunity to gain access to a large amount of the programs for a fraction of the price it would cost you to buy all of them. Some of the programs will need a small extra fee to be “unlocked”, but then they are yours forever!

There are a few different options to get yourself started on Beachbody on Demand:

These are all great deals, I promise you. But, if you are like me and love the best deals on all deals, here are two options you should really consider:

  • You can get a month’s worth of Shakeology and Beachbody on Demand for 3 months, for $140. This is like getting Beachbody on Demand for practically free for 3 months, by choosing this option! Here are the details to get set up with that option: Beachbody on Demand Challenge Pack
  • Now, there is one more option, that is only a super limited time offer (from now until February 28th, 2017). That is the Beachbody on Demand ALL ACCESS challenge pack! This pack, you get 30 days of Shakeology, a set of Portion Fix containers, and ONE FULL YEAR OF BEACHBODY ON DEMAND, with ALL the programs unlocked, including the programs that will be released in 2017!!!! This is a $6000 value, for real.

Let me put this into perspective: if you were to buy the $140 challenge pack with 3 months of Beachbody on Demand, and you stayed on it with the quarterly payment, that would cost you $257.

This does not include unlocking the additional programs that you would pay extra for. If you decided to unlock ALL of the premium programs and gain full access to all of them, it would cost you an additional $285. That right there is a cost of $542!!! You can get all of that for $199, and even if you will NEVER do all of the programs, say dancing isn’t your thing and you just want to do PiYo, well, PiYo unlock is $45, so you are gaining access to many more programs that maybe someone else in your family would like to do for only a few dollars more.

Crazy, isn’t it??

Okay, so you can get your hands on this by going here: BEACHBODY ON DEMAND ALL ACCESS CHALLENGE PACK

This offer is only good until the end of February 2017 though, then it is going to go away.

Now, just in case that isn’t enough of an incentive, for ANYONE who jumps in and invests in their health for 2017 by December 31, 2016, I will send you as a special gift either a Fixate cookbook or an extra set of containers (an extra set or two definitely come in handy, I might add!). You HAVE TO order by 10 PM CT on December 31, 2016, to qualify for that gift, and you have to make sure you have me down as your coach.

If you currently have a account but are not actively working with a coach, you can change to me by going here: Coach Change and put my information in, which is Rebecca Ingham, coach ID #25423, email

If you have never set up an account, then there should be no worries, but to be safe, forward me your confirmation email to so I can make sure everything looks good on my end. And to tell me if you want the cookbook or containers for your gift!!

3. No accountability or support

Making real, lasting changes can be SO HARD!!! Believe me, I know. I’ve fallen down more times than I could ever count, but when I had someone there to hold me accountable, to support me and to keep pushing me forward, I would finally find success.

That is what I’m all about now, being that person to others.

With me as your coach, you will get:

  • Access to my 2017 Live the Healthy Life with Rebecca online group.
  • Access to upcoming challenges, like my VIP Groups as well as other challenges.
  • Weekly accountability calls.
  • Weekly Facebook Live calls within our group.
  • Connect with others who are on their own path to make real, lasting changes so they can live a premium life.
